Proper use of the face shield can reduce the risk of contracting illnesses from infectious airborne droplets.
An epidemiological study on 133 on-duty medical ward nurses during a peak flu season shows that 23% contracted the flu despite wearing face masks and increased the risk for infection by at least 3x without the use of face shields.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogens Standard 1910.1–030 have increased its attention to eye and face protection in response to serious airborne infectious diseases and severe infectious agents spread through bodily fluids.
This is an acknowledgment of the often-overlooked entry point of infectious diseases and agents:

Compared to face shields, using only goggles and face masks is cumbersome, cost-inefficient, and offers poor coverage.
Face shields offer reliable protection against body fluid aerosols and a preferred alternative to goggles because it covers the whole face, or at the very least covers a larger area of the face, which is important especially if you’re unaware of scratches that might serve as an entry point for infectious agents.
Face masks aren’t optimal for reuse and will need immediate replacement compared to face shields that are designed for reuse and easy cleanups.
